Adolf Schreyer was one of the foremost German painters of the 19th century. The realism of his paintings influenced many painters particularly by their starkness. He was especially know for his paintings of Arab horsemen and their Arabian horses.

This catologue contains example of signatures used by Schreyer, a list of lenders to the exhibition, a list of all know Schreyer paintings and owners when known, although it is considered incomplete, a short history and example of the work of two similar artist -Delacroix and Fromentin, historical notes on the setting of Schreyer paintings with map, and filled with black and white examples of his work and one color foldout.

A popular contempory art critic wrote .."As an animal painter he obtained absolute mastery over the horse...Schreyer has shown a preference for the horse as a companion, the faithful servant, and sometimes suffering slave, of man. The horse , as depicted by him, is not a highly trained, fed, or groomed, but a wild creature, flying full tear across the wide waste...'
